I Hold The Lion's Paw

$10 entry

Fela Kuti meets Miles Davis, meets Karlheinz Stockhausen. Melbourne psychedelic jazz collective I Hold the Lion's Paw sounds familiar and, at the same time, like nothing else you’ve ever heard.

Nominated for ‘Best Australian Jazz Ensemble’ in the 2018 Jazz BELL Awards, the collective is led by trumpeter Reuben Lewis and features some of Melbourne’s most exciting musicians. The music is born out of an organic crossover of afro-beat, jazz and outré electronics; a trance-inducing concoction of electro-acoustic noise, slowly evolving soundtracks, and psychedelic free jazz.

This event will take place on the traditional land of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We pay respect to their elders past, present and emerging.

Donna Amini

Donna Amini

$10 at the door

Donna Amini is perhaps an unlikely rock musician. Since the release of her debut album in 2016, Donna has been busy performing, writing and recording fresh material. Donna's new songs display the range of her skill in crafting melodies around raw electric guitar sounds, generating cutting sonic spaces as well as gentle lulling spirituals; all delivered with seasoned conviction.

Sainthill - The project of Melbourne-based musician Tom Larkey, Sainthill is melodic, shoegazing dream-pop with reverence for the 80s goth romantics. Described by respected critic Marty Jones (Rhythms Magazine) as “intelligent, beautiful music”, Sainthill’s sound continues to develop with sonically dynamic live shows.

Burnt letters is a Melbourne-based alt-country and blues outfit influenced by Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Geechie Wiley, crushing heartbreak, and the full moon wreathed in red.

Cam Gilmour's Musical Comedy

Cam Gilmour's Musical Comedy

From the moment he was asked to repeat kindergarten, Cam Gilmour has been on a path to greatness.

Like all millennials, he’d rather do ten things badly than one thing well. Which is why he’s performed with artists you might know (like Illy, Joelistics, and Behind Crimson Eyes), written articles for publications you might not, and produced music for people you definitely don’t.

These days he writes and performs musical comedy. Partly because he can’t help cracking jokes it, but mainly for the job security.

His songs are about the things that make life a joy and a misery. It’s deep stuff.

If you want to compare him to someone, think Tim Minchin without the fame and red hair.

Brian Campeau is mostly known for his complex guitar playing accompanied by long sorrowful vocals. He is less known for his charm and willingness to please his audience. Some don’t like his sense of humour.

Originally from Canada, he’s been in Australia since 2003. He tends not to like being compared to other artists, but sees some value to these comparisons. With this in mind, some say Brian sounds like Nick Drake mixed with Radiohead. Others say he sounds angelic. That’s pretty nice.
