Ostraaly

Billy Joel will play at Madison Square Gardens once a month until he dies. Presently, Melbourne’s most restaurant band are Ostraaly. Their country ‘n northern shambling jangle draws on bush-walking, the country songbook and the way of all flesh in compact toe-tappin and heartbreakin fashion. Prolific songwriter Katharine Daly has all the wry politicking of The Mekons, the astute nerviness of Mayo Thompson and Judee Sill’s plaintive god-fearing and god-wanting, and delivers with a high and wild yodel. 2016’s Luggs was recorded as a duo, with another record on the way.. Live, they scrap and scrounge with ersatz Velvets guitar and thrumbling rhythms. Ostraaly band 2019.

Ben Alter

$10

With honest lyrics synced to an indie rock and chamber pop sound, Alter seeks to create an experience that transports individuals to a sense of familiar nostalgia and a bliss of inhibited wonder, while at the same time tell a story of past troubles- and the redemption of those times.

In a culture of constant movement and busyness, Alter’s music reminds us to take a deep breath and remember the innocence of being ourselves. The vulnerable undertones of his unique voice immerses listeners with a hopeful safeguard of better days. For a moment listening, his struggles are our struggles and his victories are our victories and his joys are our joys- and even though his music is essentially his story shared, it is one we can all understand.

Fi's Friends

Fi's Friends

Hi folks!

Dom from Cruel Bloke Don here. Welcome to the inaugural monthly gathering of Fi’s Friends at Compass Pizza. Fi personally knows 90% of the musicians in Brunswick so it would be a waste if she didn’t use all that local talent to put on a monthly gig showcasing FREE ENTRY and PIZZA!! The staples - nay, pillars of our society!

Supporting these heavenly entities will be:

The kindest/cruellest (therefore most neutral?) boy in town CRUEL BLOKE DON singing sad, sappy, sometimes funny songs.

Next up we have Karl Stefanovic’s favourite email pests and ‘formidable’ (The AU Review, not me, so…) self-described mum-rockers! That’s right! Its the duelling duet that is MILL O’SULL and ELLY HEWITT from PORPOISE SPIT. They’ll both be taking the stage separately to openly disparage the other for our entertainment. And I guess they’ll also sing you some of the most beautifully painful/heart-wrenching songs you’ve ever heard.

Lastly, but certainly not leastly, is the handsome hometown troubadour HARRIS (Fan Girl/The McQueens) What can I say? He makes me swoon. I was a McQueens fan once - heck, I still am. Did I ever tell you guys about the time I was kind of in The McQueens? I got to play ‘Back In The Laneway’ in front of some people - but I’ll let him tell you about that.

Hope to see you there!!xox

Dom very recently relocated from Manchester (UK) to Melbourne, and is keen to make the same impact here, as he did in the rainy UK city.

After supporting up and coming stars Phoebe Bridgers, Sam Brookes and Chastity Brown, Dom released his debut single Cigarettes and Beer which Triple J has described as being full of 'Sweeping moments that stir the soul'. Dom is currently gearing up to release his second single in mid-December.

Low Temperature Civics

$10

Local four-piece Low Temperature Civics will be crawling out of the woodwork to bring their energetic and distinctive sounds to Compass Pizza Bar on Friday November 23rd, celebrating the completion of their latest and soon-to-be-released EP. This forthcoming record follows on from the mothlike trajectory of their 2015 self-titled EP, a release which exemplifies their unusual marriage of fast, angular riffs with pleasantly laid-back arrangements, coming together to form the genre widely known as “quog” (quirky prog).

Joining them will be summer-soaked garage rock luminaries Swamp, bringing to life their 2018 EP 'Spotto', an offering laden with dreamy harmonies, slick guitar hooks and clever songwriting. Also expect a taste of fresh material as the band premieres brand-new single 'Tonight', a cut from their upcoming 2019 EP.
